Creative street theatre, market stalls covered with flowers and a lively atmosphere. This is Las Ramblas: A meeting point for locals and visitors!
Some landmarks? On Las Ramblas 51, visit the "Liceo", one of the most significant opera houses in the world, whose walls have enjoyed the voices of Montserrat Caballé, Pavarotti, Carreras and Pácido Domingo. Don't miss the "Casa Cuadros", on number 82, formerly a shop owned by an entrepreneur who became a millonaire just by selling umbrellas! On Las Ramblas 91, have a sip of a freshly squeezed juice at "La Boquería", born as a travel market, and today a feast for all your senses. When you get to number 99, you will find the most romantic stop: the baroque Palace of the Peru Viceroy, a present to his second wife after their wedding.
And from Las Ramblas three choices: shopping at the Paseo de Gracia, discovering the Gothic Quarter or walking along the port!
Did You Know?
..."Rambla" means "water flow"! Just before the beginning of the 18th century, the street used to be a path and a river surrounded by numerous convents and the city wall. On 1704, houses were built and trees planted in the area where we find "La Boquería" market today. On 1775, the city wall was demolished and a dockyard was constructed. Towards the end of the century, Las Ramblas was urbanised and the avenue acquired today's appearance. |
